Leather types at a glance
Terms such as aniline leather, nubuck and pull-up leather describe material properties and finishing methods. They influence appearance, durability and care requirements.
- Aniline leather: Open-pored and natural, breathable and sensitive, developing a visible patina quickly.
- Embossed leather: Structured surface, durable and easy to care for with a consistent appearance.
- Pull-up leather: Treated with waxes or oils, showing lively tonal changes with movement.
- Smooth leather: Closed surface, durable and versatile.
- Patent leather: Highly sealed and glossy, water-repellent and less breathable.
- Nappa leather: Soft and supple with a fine surface and refined feel.
- Nubuck leather: Lightly sanded with a velvety surface and natural character.
- Suede: Open-pored and soft with a textured surface and higher care requirements.
Vegetable-tanned leather at PURE Studios
We work exclusively with vegetable-tanned cowhide. Vegetable tanning preserves the natural structure and breathable qualities of the material.
Open-pored surfaces develop an individual patina over time. We deliberately avoid plastic coatings and artificial sealants.
Tanning, surface and care
The type of leather influences care requirements and how the material behaves in use. Open-pored leathers need regular care, while treated surfaces are generally more resistant.
Material-appropriate care helps preserve suppleness, elasticity and the natural appearance.
